Miami’s Got Tech Talent Says USA TODAY

November 18th, 2013

Miami may not be the next Silicon Valley but it’s getting pretty close. Tech startups and the spirit of entrepreneurship are sweeping an old factory district in Miami, and transforming it into a place where creatives can carve a name for themselves. This district we speak of is known as Wynwood Arts District.

USA Today ran an article describing the promising atmosphere it now exudes. While Miami may be renowned for lazy days, hot temps and beautiful sceneries, prodigies are springing up and are itching to make a mark.

The LAB MIAMI for instance, is a tech startup featuring shared workspaces. And if you need any indication of growth, its recent 10,000 SF expansion speaks volumes on the influx of entrepreneurs coming in. Wynwood is also a mega magnet for top art lovers worldwide. Each year it hosts Art Basel satellite fairs, bringing in millions to the local economy.

Some of the key benefits of settling in Miami for work and home life – that you won’t find in other startup destinations like New York, Denver or San Francisco, is the year-round sunny weather, less competition, and lower costs of living.

The missing piece of the puzzle however are phenomenal success stories like Facebook, Google or Apple. But the article advises that entrepreneurs should keep pressing forward with this entrepreneurial energy. It’s how success stories are built. While Venture Capitalists lean towards established locations, Miami now has strong ties to Latin American investors. A good example is LiveNinja, which has recently secured half million in funding. The Knight Foundation is also a huge advocate of Miami startups and has since invested $4M in 2013.

Art Basel Season Pop-Up Retail And Special Event Spaces

September 30th, 2013

Last year during Art Basel season, several high end designers installed pop-up shops throughout the Design District, Wynwood Arts District and Miami Beach. The entire experience with displays of art, retail and more is what brought, and continues to bring droves of visitors to this corner of the world each year. In fact, the economic impact of Art Basel is approximately over $1B in Miami alone.

This year, several new works of art, retail and fashion will be debuted during the season, and artists will typically need short-term spaces to rent if they’re currently stationed away from the action.

Wynwood’s The LAB Miami

August 5th, 2013

Many individuals associate Silicon Valley with tech startups and social networking hubs. The LAB Miami in Wynwood has adapted this concept, where it promotes creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit.

President Daniel Lafuente stated in a recent interview with Forbes Magazine, that his goal was preserving talents in Miami. It’s a factory for startups, and here’s what’s included:

  • Work Spaces – members lease a table, and have access to amenities in The LAB Miami. Since it’s a co-sharing space, the campus fosters networking with other creatives, so that ideas can be bounced around. It’s inspired energy being fed from one startup to another. Furthermore, conflicts of interest are avoided given that members are screened for approval to work in diverse niches.
  • Venues – The campus allows innovators to request event spaces, with options for renting equipment such as projectors, speakers and microphones.
  • Workshops – classes are typically offered in the evenings, and are tutored by members.
  • Capital – there’s an in-house community of angels and venture investors. This is one of the most critical benefits given that entrepreneurs require capital to fund their plans.
  • Farmer’s Market – takes place on Saturdays. Miami residents get an opportunity to buy and save local.

John S. and James L. Knight Foundation invested $650K in the facility in 2011, after the startup displayed much promise in the community.

The LAB Miami currently has 10,000 SF of available space, and the rates for membership include:

  • One Day/Month: $40
  • 24/7 Access: $200
  • Private Office: $2,500 (includes 8 members)

The LAB Miami is located at 400 NW 26th Street, Miami, FL 33127. Email: info@thelabmiami.com.
